On this episode we’re chatting with Dr Chloe Lim, who is the Founder, Director, and Science Storyteller at Twisty Science, a Senior Regulatory Scientist at the Department of Health and Aged Care, and the Founder and Balloon Artist at Giggly Wiggly Balloons. Chloe shared with us her life story about carving her own path as a young woman from Malaysia, finding and securing scholarships in New Zealand and Australia, before settling down in Canberra with her family as a culturally and linguistically diverse migrant woman.
 
Dr Chloe Lim is an executive in the Australian Public Service. She has a PhD in medical science and worked in academia for over 14 years, as a medical researcher studying epigenetics in the immune system. She was also in a biotech start-up before moving into government as a regulatory scientist.
 
She is an advocate for culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) and migrant women. She is an advisor, coach, and mentor for non-profit organisations like STEM Sisters, Global Sisters, and SiTara's Story. She shares her migrant story in the anthology book 'Undefeated', to inspire other women to embrace who they are. She amplifies the stories of women in STEM through her podcast 'CALD Voices in STEM' to improve the visibility and representation of CALD women in STEM.
 
She is also a balloon artist and entrepreneur, launching 'Giggly Wiggly Balloons' in 2019. Her talent in balloon artistry propelled her to become a finalist on Channel 7's 'Blow Up,' featuring the best balloon artists in Australia. She was awarded the Canberra Women in Business Micro Businesswoman of the Year in 2023 for her business excellence.
 
Chloe is passionate about STEM engagement in children and published a children’s book, 'What Makes You Unique', demystifying DNA. She founded Twisty Science, a science education company, to make learning fun and engaging through art and science for children. She merges her love for science and balloon twisting to create fun educational science storytelling shows.

She shared with us her life story about growing up in Sydney as a boy, moving to Cooma and Bathurst before choosing to become her authentic self with the loving unconditional support from her wife Anna.

On Tuesday, 12 March 2024 we had the absolute pleasure of hosting our book launch at Harry Hartog Bondi with an intimate group of breadwinning mums, podcast listeners and supporters of the Breadwinning Mums project. Three mums from the book - Wendy Zveglic, Yanti Ropeyarn and Julie Parkinson graced us with their presence to share their stories and reflections on their lives as working mums, wives, sisters, and beautifully imperfect humans.
